Renwick House: A Clarification

James Renwick

Recently on the infamous weblog Shall We Sing a Song For You, I commented that Union College would be a better place to live than Renwick House. For those who do not know anything about these instituions do not worry about it (you have better things to do with your time). Making a negative comment about Renwick was immediately interpreted by the owner of the blog as “sour grapes” and bitterness because I was unsuccessful in applying for a position at Renwick the previous year. He made a number of “hit and run” comments which were an attack upon my honesty and an attempt to say I am a hypocrite; yet, sadly, he did not allow me to respond to his accusations as he closed the thread. Consequently, since the ninth commandment demands that we protect our own and our neighbour’s good name, I am called upon to protect the integrity of my characher.

1. I pointed out that Renwick House was in bondage to the civil magistrate, and protested against the system of Statist tyranny under which it operates. This is true. Ask the people who run it. Of course, Stephen Steele said “you have applied to live in Renwick (when statist tyranny etc didn’t seem to be an issue).” However, if he had allowed me to respond I would have informed him that I was not aware of the fact that Renwick House was under state authority when I applied for the post. Once I became aware of the fact that they were in bondage to Caesar, and upheld unbiblical, egalitarian employment policies, I was relieved that I did not have to work for them, and so when the opportunity to apply for the same post arose a year later, I did not apply for it. While I realise that we have to work within the system of Statist, Egalitarian, Socialist tyranny that we find ourselves in, there is no way that a house using the name of an anti-Erastian like James Renwick should be enslaved to the state (please keep in mind, despite popular opinion, that this venue has nothing to do with the Reformed Presbyterian Church).

2. I was continually accused of “bitterness” at not being appointed to the post. Let me just say that this assumption violates the Biblical directive not to impute evil motives to our neighbour when we cannot prove them (1 Cor. 13:5 NKJV). Can Stephen Steele tell what is on my heart? No. Then he should abstain from making such assumptions. All I was saying was that one place would be better to live in than another. Moreover, the charge of bitterness is unjustified as I contacted one of the committee in charge of Renwick House after I failed to get the post and voiced my disapproval of their Statism and Egalitarian compromise of Biblical principles. This is a Biblical way to deal with problems (Matt. 18:15-20), and as a result I was fully informed as to their unbiblical principles. And so, once I found out what principles the organisation was run on, I was pretty convinced that I would prefer not to work for them.

Having vindicated my character from false accusations, I remain convinced that the name of James Renwick – who died opposing Erastian tyranny – should not be associated with a residential house that operates an Egalitarian employment policy and is in bondage to the state. If anyone wishes to discuss the matter further, then please feel free to comment.

Sorry to see that some innocent joking has been so badly misinterpreted. I would have thought if you were someone willing to start bashing a residence in Belfast that maintains a Christian witness to the student community and is somewhere Christians can enjoy fellowship with one another you wouldn’t mind some friendly banter of that sort. Thought I’d point out Ecclesiates 7 v 9:

“Do not be easily provoked in your spirirt, for anger resides in the lap of fools.”

We are also told in the Bible to be in the world but not of the world. Complain about erastianism all you want, but a fat lot of good it will do the world if Christians build up walls around themselves and make no effort to get side by side with needy sinners. If you want to bash Renwick anymore come and do it in person instead of losing sleep writing about us at 3.15 in the morning.

Its okay, I knew you were only jesting. I suffer from insomnia, hence I wrote that at 3:15 am. Please note that I did not mention your jokes in the post. I agree Christians are in the world, but that is not an excuse for unbiblical practices. Thanks for commenting.

It’s nice to see someone willing to defend their own character on something that may seem trivial to others.

I do not know if you remember me, or not, but I used to frequent your blog a while back and have returned to the blogosphere after getting married.

I hope all is well with you, I have been reading your site through Google Reader often.

PS) I see you found my families website! How on earth did you do that? :-)

Also, I notice that your header is a quote from Nate Eschelman. How do you know him?

I took a number of posts from that site and put them on my Word Press blog. Once Jill (my wife) and I start having children that Buie Family site should get a lot more interesting, but for now it’s staying rather low-key.

On my WordPress dashboard I noticed someone clicked from your site to get to mine.

Nate made that comment on a Yahoo forum when someone was discussing my RPW book.

The Lord seems to have greatly blessed you with your new wife; I hope your family increases and builds the kingdom of Christ.

what is Statism and Egalitarianism? how do we put out unbiblical practice or is satan trying to driving a wedge between Christians?

  8. Rob

    Thank you for your questions.

Statism is when the state takes power to itself beyond its God-appointed role of administering justice, fighting defensive wars, establishing the true religion etc. And when the state becomes basically totalitarian in its power.

Egalitarianism is the idea of equal opportunities and other such things.

    Hope that helps.

  10. Actually if you read the accounts of the people of God enslaved in the totalitarian states of Egypt and Babylon, they cried out to God to delieverance from such bondage.

As for girlfriends, well its alright for you with all those nice-looking Baptist girls to choose from – try being an RP and you will find its not so easy.

This is not an attack on your position but real questions due to my interest in the things you have said.

I knew Renwick got government funding and that they therefore had to make the house open to others outside the P.R. Church. I was not aware of other conditions. What exactly are they?

Most jobs are for companies and organisations that are subject to equal opportunities’ legislation; is this fact on its own reason for not working for them?

How could this possibly be a reason for not staying there?

  12. Thanks for your questions.

I am not sure if we could go as far to say that it is a reason for not staying there (note I have not gone that far).

However, it should be noted that I was told by one of the members of the committee that you do not even have to be a Christian to be the warden.

I think we can distinguish between job companies that are run by pagans, and an organisation that is supposed to be run by Christians, but is being governed by humanistic principles.

Although maybe I am going too far in saying that I couldn’t work for them. I will think about it. Though I can definitely say that I have no desire to work for them.

Please note this is NOT an attack on the RP church, as CRA has nothing (officially at least) to do with the denomination.

  13. Daniel,

Thank you for the helpful clarifications.

Hey Daniel. Hope you’re well. Believe you were doing a module with a friend of mine, Scott Moore, on the Presbyterian Church. I’m sorry but I wrote no such comment earlier – someone else has used my name, though you’re reply made me laugh!

  15. Thanks Simon, I thought there was something wrong with that comment. I wonder who it was who made that comment? Scott and I shall be examined tomorrow morning, though I will not see him as I am in the green room.
