Edward Donnelly on National Repentance
Having just returned from my church’s fellowship meeting, where I had the pleasure of hearing Ted Donnelly preach on Jeremiah 2 (he was not there in person we listened to a tape), I decieded to track down the sermon and bring it to the attention of a wider audience. Basically, Prof. Donnelly shows how Judah had turned away from its covenant God and had gone after idols and indulged in national wickedness. Although distinguishing Britain from Israel (he is not a British Israelite), he shows us how the passage has much relevance to the United Kingdom today as we have had similar privileges yet turned our backs as a nation on the Living God and run after various idols. Moreover, Prof. Donnelly highlights the fact that the UK, like Israel, was in covenant with God as our parliaments swore to the Solemn League and Covenant in 1643.
The sermon, though short, is particularly useful from a practical point of view as the preacher reminds us that we need to pray for our nation, and that if God does not turn things around, it hardly bears thinking about what we will be like as perversion increases, false religion abounds, and the state takes to itself more and more power. Such a nation is ripe for judgment; we must repent. Personally speaking, it would not surprise me in the slightest if a nuclear bomb fell on one of the big cities in England or Scotland (or perhaps even Belfast) and wiped out the entire population, as it would be exactly what we deserve for our wickedness as a nation before God. So, please take time to listen to this sermon ‘Nation Forsakes God‘.
